Welcome to the Library

The school library is found on the first floor of the school and is managed by Mrs G McCaul with the assistance of Mrs J Averell. Its two main aims are to promote reading for enjoyment and to support all aspects of study. The Library offers a comfortable environment where pupils may read, study and use the IT facilities. It is open daily from 8.30, each break and lunch time, and stays open until 5.30 to facilitate those pupils wishing to stay after school.

The range of material available in the Library is extensive and varied with stock updated throughout the year. You will find the fiction separated into junior and senior fiction with the classics of children and adult literature alongside modern publications and new releases. The non-fiction collection covers both academic and recreational topics. For relaxation time the Library offers the use of Nintendo DS consoles at the after school homework club. Daily and weekly newspapers are also available that cover local and national press.

Every junior class is timetabled for ‘Reading for Pleasure’. This is not viewed as an academic subject but a period in the middle of a busy week where pupils are encouraged to read for enjoyment. This may take the form of quiet reading, completing Accelerated Reader quizzes on books they have read or an opportunity to recommend books to their peers. As part of this class, pupils have the opportunity to review books and influence library stock. The library also assists in the annual Readathon to raise money for CLIC Sargent NI. Student voice is important in the Library and pupils are encouraged to give feedback through questionnaires and a comment box. Senior pupils are encouraged to become independent learners and use the library for study and research.

The Library supports the English Department with the Accelerated Reader Programme. This allows each Year 8 pupil to have a personalised reading programme specific to his reading ability. All Library fiction books have an easily identifiable Accelerated Reading Book Level label which allows the pupil to quickly identify books within their reading range. After reading the book the pupil can take an Accelerated Reader quiz on one of the many laptops available.
